Dan was born in Baltimore and raised in Laurel, Maryland, and is a graduate of Auburn University. After graduation, Dan joined the sales force of Service Corp International, working with them in Mobile, Alabama, and Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1997, Dan joined American Express Financial Advisors, which is where he met his business partner, Joe Matza. Dan and Joe left American Express in 2009 to form Murphy Matza Wealth Management.

Dan has more than 25 years of experience as a financial advisor. This long tenure gives Dan a distinct perspective on the financial markets that only time and experience can provide. He holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® certification, which signifies specialized knowledge of fiduciary responsibility, particularly as it applies to 401(k) and other retirement plans.

Dan and his wife, Ashley, live in New Bern, North Carolina. They have been married for 23 years and they have three children: Danny, a sophomore at Liberty University; Parker, a freshman at Liberty University; and daughter Rheagan, a high school junior. Dan also enjoys (and Ashley puts up with his love for) Auburn football. Dan and Ashley enjoy their date nights and spending time traveling as a family or enjoying their second home in Atlantic Beach.

Dan is a commissioner for the town of Trent Woods and chairman of the board for The Epiphany School of Global Studies. He is a board member of the Fireman’s Local Relief Fund for the West of New Bern Volunteer Fire Department. He is a past board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, serving on the finance committee, and was a youth leader of Garber United Methodist Church for many years. Currently, much of Dan and Ashley's free time is spent doing family activities, where their photography hobby has shifted to many pictures of the kids! They are members of Garber United Methodist Church.

You may see Dan and his dog Dave riding around town on his orange Ural Motorcycle. It is a replica World War II motorcycle with a sidecar, so it’s hard to miss!

Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.  Upon graduation, Joe served for five years as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.  Following his time in the service, Joe spent eight years working in mid- and senior-level management positions with two different Fortune 500 companies: American Express and Dun & Bradstreet.

In 1997, Joe joined American Express Financial Advisors which is where he met his business partner, Dan Murphy. Joe and Dan left American Express in 2009 to form Murphy Matza Wealth Management.

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and Certified Fund Specialist® with more than 25 years of experience as a financial advisor, Joe won't say that he's seen it all, but he knows he's seen some of the best and worst times that the markets can send his way. He believes those experiences have taught him invaluable lessons that make him a better advisor today than he has ever been.

Joe and his wife, Mary, have been married for more than 35 years.  They live in Cary, North Carolina and have a second home at Emerald Isle, North Carolina.  Joe and Mary enjoy traveling, hiking, reading, watching Carolina Hurricanes hockey, and spending time at the beach with family and friends!  Joe is also a part-time employee of the NHL as an off-ice official, so you just might see him at the PNC Arena in the penalty box or running the game clock.  Joe and Mary attend Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh. He and Mary are also active in several of the programs that minister to the homeless of the Raleigh area.

A fun fact about Joe is that while he and Mary do not have any pets of their own, they are frequently “adopted” by their neighbor’s cats who spend time hanging out with them in their home.

Elevia joined the team in 2005 and is a fully registered securities representative. Her prior experience included working with BB&T in its Investment department and with the New Bern Chamber of Commerce as the Membership Director before joining us as the New Bern Client Service Manager, a role she held for 16 years.

Due to Elevia’s exceptional communication and customer service skills and the fact that she had her securities registrations, she made the transition to the role of Associate Financial Advisor in 2021. With Dan as her mentor and guide, we have no doubt Elevia will be an even greater asset to our clients and our firm as she continues to learn and grow in her new role!

Paul was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Growing up in a military family, he spent several years in Europe and Asia before eventually settling in Long Beach, California, where he spent his teenage years. Paul managed major projects from coast to coast, eventually ending up in North Carolina in 1992.

In 1998, Paul joined American Express Financial Advisors, which later became Ameriprise Financial. It was there that he met Dan Murphy and Joe Matza.

Calm and cool is a good way to describe Paul. With more than 24 years of experience as a financial advisor, Paul has worked with and guided his clients through some of the most extreme ups and downs the financial markets have ever seen.

Paul and his wife, Vicki, live in New Bern, North Carolina. They have been married since 1990. They have two daughters, Megan and Nicole. Paul's passion and love for professional and collegiate sports have no boundaries as he is an avid USC Trojans football, St. Louis Rams, and Boston Red Sox fan.

Paul and his family attend Brice's Creek Bible Church, where Paul is the chairman of elders and Vicki is involved with youth ministries and the annual Christmas nativity drive-thru. Paul is also the president of Business Watch in New Bern, working with local police and sheriff departments, and is involved with groups preparing high school students for college by helping them understand financial concepts and finance. Paul is also involved with Habitat for Humanity and working with Relgious Community Services (RCS). In their free time, Paul and his family enjoy boating and spending time on the beach.

A fun fact about Paul is that while skiing in Austria on his honeymoon, Paul missed a turn at high speed.  From his wife’s point of view, he appeared to ski right off the mountain and she thought she had very quickly become a widow!  Luckily there was more mountain over the edge and Paul was able to avoid harm, climb back to safety, and enjoy continued skiing and many more years of marriage!
